No one
expected Andy Murray to overtake Novak Djokovic as the World No.1 in May, when
Djokovic has a lead of close to 8000 points at the top of the rankings, more
than the number of points Murray has. Nevertheless, Djokovic’s lack of form
allowed Murray to rise to the No.1 spot after the last Masters event of the
year in Paris, where Murray was the champion. Murray was very consistent in the
latter half of the year, and he further cemented his No.1 position when he
defeated Djokovic in the finals of the ATP World Tour Finals to confirm his
place as the Year End No.1 player for the first time in the history.
The
highlight of his season is to definitely win Wimbledon and being able to defend
his gold medal at the Rio Olympics. He is the only player in the history to win
a gold medal in the Men Singles event at the Olympics for consecutive times,
and he did it by defeating Juan Martin del Potro in the final. He only lost 2
sets in his whole Wimbledon campaign, of which both of them are lost against
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He then defeated Grand Slam final debutant Milos Raonic in
straight sets, in front of his home crowd.
