Angelique Kerber 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 Karolina Pliskova
Pliskova contested in her 1st ever Grand Slam final after a magical run which saw her defeat both the Williams sisters, and she faced the brand new World No.1 Angelique Kerber in the final. Kerber won the thrilling final to win her 2nd Grand Slam of the year and cemented her position as the World No.1.
Pliskova
made a poor start to her 1st ever Grand Slam final, showing some
jitters when she got broken in her service game immediately at the start of the
match. Kerber kept her nose in front of the scoreboard throughout the whole
set, and she was just too good for Pliskova, whom she had just lost to 2 weeks
ago in the final of Cincinnati. Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, Pliskova’s
serve crumbled again as she got broken for the set after 40 minutes.
The first
break of the 2nd set came late, with Pliskova finally making the
first breakthrough by breaking Kerber’s serve for the first time in the match
to lead in the set for the first time. Pliskova kept her advantage going as
there were no more breaks of service in the game, and therefore she
successfully served out the set 6-4 to level the match at one set all after 47
minutes of intense tennis in the second set.
After a
comfortable hold of service to start the final set with, Kerber looked out of
sorts as she lost 3 consecutive games to trail by a break in the final set. Nevertheless,
Kerber showed why she was the new World No.1 as she went on a mini-run of her
own by winning 3 straight games which included breaking back straight away. Once
again, when Pliskova was serving to stay in the match, her serve crumbled once
again as she made 3 straight unforced errors to gift the match to Kerber and
miss the great opportunity to win her 1st ever Grand Slam title.
